Save Both Time and Money with Online Grocery Delivery
Sure, ordering groceries online for delivery will save you time. Of course. But how can it save money, too? If you’ve been on the fence about ordering groceries online, this post will shed light on both the pros and cons of grocery delivery. In addition, I’ll share how this is actually saving us money, too.
Save (At Least) an Hour Each Week
I think grocery delivery is a life-saver for busy moms. Now, grocery shopping was always something I didn’t mind doing. I actually enjoy walking the aisles, checking out new products.
But, now that grocery delivery is available to us from several stores, we’ve been taking advantage of this pretty often. I’m probably loving this service more than I should, lol!
What started as an “occasional” time saver has become a regular thing. It just makes me so happy to save at least an hour physically going to the grocery to shop for food each week. I’m really getting spoiled by this!
To be clear, I’m saying “at least an hour” to be conservative. It’s actually saving me more than that, because I like to take my time when grocery shopping. In addition, it gets easier and easier to place my order each time. Since all of my previous orders are visible, I’m able to quickly click on the pantry staples and add them to the cart.
Grocery Delivery is More Expensive (Or, Is It?)
Sure, it’s more expensive. There are delivery fees, or annual membership fees, depending on the service you choose.
Furthermore, you’ll want to leave a tip. I like to leave at least 15%.
This is a service, after all. And it’s saving me a lot of time and energy, so I’m very appreciative! I totally think these costs are worth it to save time and reduce the stress of shopping with a little one.
But here’s the thing – I know for sure that we’re actually saving money by having our groceries delivered.
No “Impulse Purchases”
Impulse purchases at the grocery are hard to resist. Especially if you go to the store hungry!
Since there are no “impulse purchases”, I really think we’re spending less overall than if I were physically going to the store.
The Cons
Grocery delivery doesn’t come without a few drawbacks, though…
Meat and Produce
Of course, there are certain things like meat and produce that I would rather pick out myself, so I usually save these items for quick grocery runs.
Another thing I’ve had to accept is the expiration dates on things like bread and dairy. I always look at expiration dates and will pull a newer item off the shelf if I know my family won’t consume the item fast enough. Of course, with grocery delivery the shopper will usually just grab the first item on the shelf.
On one order, a loaf of wheat bread was delivered with a short expiration date. Had I been shopping, I would definitely have searched for a newer one from that brand. If a newer one wasn’t available, I would have switched to a different brand with a longer expiration date.
I’m sure I could specify my preferences on the expiration dates, but it hasn’t been enough of a problem to do so yet.
Substitutions
From my experience, substitutions can be an issue. I think this depends heavily on when you’re placing your order.
I’ve had most of my substitution issues when shopping late in the day. Usually I pre-select acceptable substitutions while placing my order. Occasionally, the shopper will text with a different substitution.
In cases that I know I do not want the item to be swapped for anything else, I’ll make this notation during the shopping process.
Online Grocery Delivery – A Lifesaver for Busy Moms
So, all in all, I really love grocery delivery. Can you tell? I’m so happy it’s become so widely available in our area.
Yeah, I know… I’m becoming a little obsessed!
